Communities Helping Communities

Communities Helping Communities (CHC) is an AmeriCorps Education Award program. Playmates Preschools & Child Development Centers, Inc. is the fiscal agent for the Cabell Wayne Early Childhood Council (CWECC) for this program. The grant for this program is awarded through Volunteer West Virginia, The States Commission for National and Community Service. The program has 30 half-time members serving in 11 sites throughout Cabell and Wayne County, serving local families with children aged birth through 13 years of age at participating child care centers and 21st Century Learning Centers.

Members provide support and services that enhance children and youth in education to promote school readiness and to reduce drop-out rates by providing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) activities daily. Members develop and implement a community-wide collaborative project to meet the following project objectives; 1) improve learning readiness for 200 pre-kindergarten students; 2) improve the academic performance of approximately 600 K-8 students; and 3) strengthen communities through the recruitment of 180 volunteers and engaging in service learning projects.

At the end of the service year, members earn an education voucher to help pay for educational expenses. Member’s activities include recruiting volunteers from the community to participate in activities and projects. Members are involved in common events that are nationally recognized days of service including Martin Luther King Day of Service, National Volunteer Week, AmeriCorps Week and 9-11 Day of Service.
